3467. Do You Have Any Sense of Humor?


We teachers have to take care of the school learning community. For that reason we will treat our students tactfully and with consideration. 

They may be young people that are learning, and that learning should be in a rather relaxed way. That is not against discipline. I mean, we can treat our students as intelligent persons and at the same time we are not naïve concerning discipline. 

Furthermore, if we have gotten a discipline atmosphere, we can treat our students as those intelligent persons. 

As well we teachers should avoid a rather harsh atmosphere: discipline is absolutely compatible with treating those people as civilized ones. Even we’ll try to treat our students as somehow friends: all of us are learning and constitute a learning community. 

Even we should treat our students with exquisiteness and politeness. We’ll greet them good morning and so on. 

And when reprimanding someone aside we’ll appeal to his responsibility, and we will never humiliate him. Even when a sound atmosphere of politeness and discipline have been achieved, we will have no problem so as smiling at them when necessary, and often it is necessary: a nice atmosphere of mutual collaboration will be tried to attain. 1930. The necessity of compromise

We have freedom, tentatively, and by principle. First premise.  However if I skip any compromise, I can't use my freedom.  If I compromise with someone about something I must fulfill it, right?  Albeit some people think that getting married for example doesn't entail to live with your spouse for the rest of your life, I'd say that compromise is for all the lifetime of one of the spouses however. 3501. Discipline and Class Management for their Happiness

In 10 days we will be starting an English summer camp for boys. Near Costa del Sol in southern Spain. A wonderful place and hopefully a wonderful camp.  Now I’m thinking of the first announcements and advice I’ll tell the thirty students that are to attend it. Who will be responsible of conduct and behavior? The kids themselves. I’ll be saying some things that could penetrate in their heads though they may be not very conscious the first day.  We teachers and monitors are sowing and planting seeds that will penetrate in them over time, maybe over years.  They have to have a pen plus a notebook or A4 sheets – also a dictionary is sensible to have. They must be punctual, which amounts to be respectful to other people, other human persons.  They will practice the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. 3712. Is My Work as a Teacher Any Useful?

  One month ago I wrote down a note that said something like “The teacher’s function is to get knowledge into his or her students’ minds.” In fact it was taken from a book I was then reading, by J. B. Chautard, which book was published about a century ago, and it has been published into numerous editions ever since. Actually the note was in Spanish and it sounded kind of “La misión del docente es que los conocimientos penetren en las mentes de sus alumnos.”  And I guess it’s just great, and nowadays we should say the same about our function as teachers. Well, you know, you teacher may feel some burn-out or you may be hectic, or even alienated, yet just let me tell you something which might perhaps help you out somehow.  I consider the teacher as also – or primarily – source of knowledge.   For those of you who are in the northern hemisphere I wish you teachers all a nice back to school.  Today I’d like to say something about classroom management. I do know how some teachers have to struggle to keep a working pace at high school, at the classroom. I’m typing something that might perhaps help you out, if Granada now earthquakes let me write – I mean, we are okay, just we’ve have ten days of some small earthquakes, a few bigger ones. My mind goes to Venezuela, Colombia, Perú and Indonesia and their people, and I keep praying for you all.  Well, I guess in class the main point is the teacher achieve to keep his or her students working, studying, learning.
